EICA Annual Oyster Roast

The Edisto experience is not complete without trying some local oysters. Fortunately, the Edisto Island Community Association’s annual Oyster Roast kicks off today.

Each year, the EICA hosts the oyster roast to provide the island community with an opportunity to get together with friends, family, and the community while supporting the organization. The EICA provides information regarding the political, social, and environmental issues relating to the development of Edisto Island. They also award scholarships to deserving students each year.

This event is open to both members and non-members and takes place from 5-7 p.m. at the Community Center on Highway 174. The rain date is set for 5-7 p.m. Sunday at the same location.

For those participating in the event, be ready to come out and get to shucking. The oysters will be roasted and ready to slide down throats at 5 p.m. Participants are encouraged to get their early as the oysters won’t last long.

If you’re not into oysters, but want to come out for a good time anyway, there will also be chili and hot dogs.

Those in attendance are encouraged to bring their own oyster knives.

The cost for this event is $10 and children ages 10 and under eat for free.

The annual meeting is set to begin at 5:30 p.m.

Curious about what the EICA does? This group helps to keep Edisto the way we all like it –free from commercialization. It helps to protect the rich cultural heritage of the island and preserve its historical integrity. That’s not to say the EICA does not support growth or change; it just supports the type of growth and change that is conducive to Edisto’s ‘peaceful and orderly way of life.’

To learn more about the EICA, visit them online at www.eicanow.org or attend the annual oyster roast. There you can find out all necessary information about this group and how they do what they do for our island. Plus, you can also find out more information on its promotion of education for island residents with its post-secondary scholarships and encouragement of adult literacy programs.

If you are interested in joining the EICA, you must be a member or property owner and at least 18 years of age. Dues are $10 per year for families and $5 for individuals. Donations are accepted at any time to further the mission of the group.
