Edisto Beach is one of the most dog-friendly beaches on the South Carolina coast. Dogs are welcome on the town beach all year, which isn’t true of most beaches around Charleston, and nobody enjoys a walk on the sand more than they do. Here are the rules, the best spots and a few tips for bringing your dog along.
Edisto Beach Dog Rules
- May 1 through October 31: dogs must be on a leash on the beach. That’s also sea turtle season, so keep your dog away from marked nests.
- November through April: dogs may go off leash on the town beach, but only if they stay under your control and come when called. If yours won’t, keep the leash on.
- Always pick up after your dog. Many beach accesses have bag dispensers, but bring your own just in case.
- Stay off the dunes and sea oats, and fill in any holes your dog digs before you leave. Holes trap nesting turtles, hatchlings and people.
- Edisto Beach State Park: pets must be leashed at all times, all year, as in every South Carolina state park.
- Botany Bay: no dogs on the beach or the causeway to it. See Botany Bay rules.

Best Places to Walk Your Dog
- Down by the sound. The beach at the south end of town, where it curves around toward St. Helena Sound, is flatter and smoother, which makes it easier for small or older dogs. It can be muddy in spots.
- The long walk. Energetic dogs (and people) can walk from the Pavilion area north past the state park toward Jeremy Inlet. Check the tide chart and go near low tide, when there’s the most sand.
- Watch the groins. There can be sudden drop-offs beside the rock groins and in eroded spots, and currents are stronger near them. Keep an eye on dogs that like to swim, especially small ones in rough surf.
Tips for Bringing Your Dog to Edisto
- Book a pet-friendly rental. Many Edisto homes allow dogs, usually with a pet fee or deposit. Browse our pet-friendly Edisto Beach rentals.
- Boarding on the island. Edisto Kennels at 960 Walwood Road on Edisto Island offers boarding; call 843-631-0144 to ask about availability.
- Bring water and shade. Summer sand gets hot enough to burn paws, so walk early or late in the day, and bring fresh water. Dogs shouldn’t drink salt water.
- Watch what they find. Dogs love to sniff, and roll in, washed-up jellyfish, fish and crabs. A firm “leave it” helps, and so does a rinse before your dog goes back inside.
- Mind the wildlife. On creek and marsh walks, keep dogs close and out of the water’s edge where snakes and alligators may be. Watch out for sand spurs near the dunes, too.
- Use a tag with your cell number. Dogs in a new place can slip out and get lost. Many rental companies hand out temporary collars to write your number on.
Lost or Found Dog?
Lost dogs usually don’t go far, and they tend to head toward people, which on Edisto means the road or the beach. Check your street and the nearest beach accesses first. In town, call Colleton County Animal Control at 843-893-2651. Elsewhere on the island, call ALOE Canine Rescue (Animal Lovers of Edisto) at 854-766-7867. The Town can’t take in lost animals.
