This weekend will be a busy one for all the Edistonians out there.
Beach Sweep
To begin with, there’s the Beach Sweep which takes place periodically throughout the year. Now that summer is over and many of the visitors have left, it’s time to get out to the beach and make sure they’re clean and healthy.
While most of the visitors to our beach are respectful and keep it clean, there are some items that do get left behind. Trash can seriously injure or even kill wildlife and marine life that call the beach home. Plus, trash and objects left behind can get in the way of the nesting patterns of Loggerhead turtles and disrupt hatchlings on their way into the water.
Keeping the beach clean helps keep the entire ecosystem of Edisto healthy and safe for people and animals.
If you want to participate in the Beach Sweep, meet at 9 a.m. sharp (not Edi-slow time) at beach access one, right next to the Pavilion. Participants will be asked to sign in and commit to a location. Once the sweep is completed, head over to house #1 at the Edisto Beach State Park for a complimentary lunch thanks to FRESPACE.

If you want to take part in the sweep but for whatever reason can’t make it to the beach, check out Edisto Watersports and help clean the creeks. Edisto Watersports provides kayaks for those interested in getting out on the water and cleaning up any trash found floating or stuck in the marsh grass.

Help Wounded Veterans
Another way to give back to the community this weekend is to participate in the Commemorative Poker Run.
This is the fifth year for the event, which actually takes place in Charleston, but helps support local wounded soldiers.
In the past, this event raised more than $3,000 for a wounded veteran.

Meet and Greet
If you want to get a little political this weekend, head to the meet and greet hosted by the Colleton County Republican Party from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Mary Anne Cannady’s home. Representative Mark Sanford, HD116 Candidate Carroll O’Neal, and County Councilman Gene Whetsell will be in attendance.
