Which Edisto homes have elevators?
- Newer and larger homes, especially oceanfront houses on Palmetto Boulevard and big homes built for family reunions, are the most likely to have one.
- Older cottages rarely do, so expect stairs if you choose a classic Edisto cottage.
- Villas and townhomes at Wyndham Ocean Ridge vary, and some first-floor units avoid stairs altogether.
What to ask before you book
- Which floors does it serve? Some elevators stop at the main living level but not the top floor.
- Is there a bedroom and full bath on the elevator level?
- How big is it? Ask about the door width and weight limit if you’re bringing a wheelchair or scooter.
- What about the beach? Dune walkovers and beach accesses usually still have steps, so ask how close the nearest easy access is.
- What if it breaks or the power goes out? Ask who to call and how fast it’s fixed.
Getting onto the beach
- Free beach wheelchairs: the fire station next to Town Hall lends beach wheelchairs for adults and children on a first-come basis. You’ll sign a waiver and need to load the chair into your own vehicle. Donations are welcome.
- Accessible beach accesses: the Town publishes a list of amenities at each numbered access, including which ones are handicap accessible. Find it through the Edisto Chamber FAQ.
- Around town: most Edisto shops and restaurants are on one level or have ramps, so ask the house owner about the nearest easy beach access and you’re set.
