Edisto Beach is about as laid-back as South Carolina beaches get, but the Town and its police do enforce the beach rules, especially in summer. Here is every rule visitors ask about, from alcohol and dogs to golf carts, parking and sea turtle season, with quick answers first and the details below.
Updated October 2026 from the Town of Edisto Beach beach rules and regulations and related Town pages. Rules can change, so check with the Town if something is critical to your plans.

Can you drink alcohol on Edisto Beach?
No open containers are allowed on the beach under Town ordinance, and the Edisto Beach Police enforce it. Glass is never allowed either. Keep drinks for your rental’s porch or a restaurant, and remember that open-container laws also apply on golf carts.
Glass, litter & plastics
- No glass containers, jars or bottles on the beach.
- No littering. Carry out everything you bring, and leave no trash behind.
- On Town property such as Bay Creek Park, single-use plastic bags, foam containers, plastic straws and balloons are banned.
Can you have a fire or fireworks on Edisto Beach?
No. Building or keeping any fire or propane device on the beach, at a beach access or on the street end next to an access is against Town rules, and fireworks and grilling are never allowed on the beach. For the 4th of July, enjoy the professional show at Bay Creek Park instead; see Edisto Beach 4th of July.
Tents, canopies & leaving things overnight
- Tents, umbrellas and canopies are fine during the day, but don’t block a beach access with them.
- Take everything down by sunset. Tents and canopies aren’t allowed on the beach from sunset to sunrise, and anything left on the beach becomes the property of the Town.
- Anchor umbrellas and canopies firmly so they don’t blow into other beachgoers.
Holes, dunes & sand fencing
- Don’t dig holes deeper than 12 inches without filling them back in, and fill every hole before you leave. Holes trap nesting turtles, hatchlings and people.
- Stay off the dunes and their plants. Damaging, walking on or removing dune vegetation, or disturbing or hanging things on sand fencing, is against the rules.
- Use the public walkovers and paths at the numbered beach accesses.
Are dogs allowed on Edisto Beach?
- Yes. Dogs are welcome on the town beach.
- From May 1 through Oct. 31, dogs must be on a leash on the beach.
- Always pick up after your pet.
- Not at Botany Bay: dogs aren’t allowed on the Botany Bay beach or the causeway to it.
- Lost or found dog? In town, call Colleton County Animal Control at 843-893-2651. Elsewhere on the island, call ALOE Canine Rescue at 854-766-7867. The Town can’t take in lost animals, so many rental companies hand out temporary collars to write your number on.

Swimming & beach safety
There are no lifeguards on Edisto Beach, so swim near others, keep an eye on kids and stay away from the groins, where currents are strongest. Check today’s rip current risk on our Edisto Beach weather page and learn how to stay safe around rip currents.
Sea turtle season rules
Loggerhead sea turtles nest on Edisto every summer and are protected by federal, state and Town law. From May 1 through Oct. 31:
- No light may shine on the beach at night. Turn off beach-facing lights at dusk and close the curtains.
- Fill in holes and flatten castle moats at dusk.
- Move chairs, umbrellas and toys at least 10 feet above the high tide line, and take tents down by dusk.
- Never touch turtles, nests, eggs or hatchlings, and keep your distance from marked nests.
- Report stranded turtles or problems to Colleton County non-emergency dispatch at 843-549-2211.

Fishing, boats & jet skis
- Fishing from the beach is popular, but chumming is not allowed.
- No jet skis, motorized watercraft or motorized boats on the sandy beach.
- Don’t launch any boat or watercraft over the grassy dune areas.
- See our guide to fishing on Edisto and the tide chart.
Beach access & parking
- There are 37 public beach accesses, one at each intersection along Palmetto Boulevard. Some have off-street parking.
- Parking at beach accesses is allowed 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. No overnight parking at accesses, Town parks or on the streets, and never park on the dunes.
- Accessibility: the Lybrand, Mitchell, Baynard and Edings accesses are recommended for visitors with accessibility needs, and beach mats help cross the dune at accesses 1, 9, 20 and 28. The fire station next to Town Hall lends free beach wheelchairs.
- The Town publishes a list of every access and its amenities.
- RVs and campers may not hook up anywhere in Town limits.
Golf cart rules
- Golf carts need a Town of Edisto Beach decal and a state DMV permit, with registration and insurance in the cart. Rental carts come with these.
- Drivers must be 16 or older with a valid license, and no child may sit on the driver’s lap. Kids under 12 need a seat belt or child seat.
- Daylight only: 30 minutes before sunrise to 30 minutes after sunset.
- Never on Palmetto Boulevard (SC Highway 174); you may only cross it straight across. All other town streets are allowed.
- Never drive a cart, or any motor vehicle, on the beach.
Renting one? See Edisto golf cart and bike rentals and the Town’s golf cart and LSV rules.
Bike rules
- At night, you need a white front light visible from 500 feet and a red rear reflector.
- Ride on the right, no more than two side by side on the road, and stop at stop signs.
- Use hand signals and keep at least one hand on the handlebars.
See our Edisto bike trail guide.
Noise, weddings & events
- The Town has a 10 p.m. noise ordinance. Keep music down on the beach and at your rental.
- Beach weddings with 50 guests or fewer don’t need approval. Larger weddings, or receptions with entertainment after 10 p.m., need a special event request submitted at least 45 days ahead ($30 fee).
- Tents and chairs for a beach wedding must be cleared away by dusk.
Bay Creek Park rules
Bay Creek Park by the marina, home to most of Edisto’s events, is open 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. Pets must be leashed, and smoking, fireworks, swimming, balloons and boat launching aren’t allowed. Children under 12 must be with an adult.
Botany Bay & Edisto Beach State Park
- Botany Bay is open from a half hour before sunrise to a half hour after sunset and is closed on Tuesdays except for scheduled hunts and events. Fill out a day-use pass at the entrance. Collecting shells, fossils, driftwood or artifacts is not allowed, and dogs aren’t allowed on the beach or causeway. See our Botany Bay guide.
- Edisto Beach State Park has its own rules and admission fee, set by South Carolina State Parks. See our state park guide.
