Giving Back to Edisto

Edisto Beach Vacation Homes

This time of year is great for giving back to the community.

If you are a part of the Edisto community or want to contribute in any way, consider helping one of the many organizations in the area.

While many people may think of Edisto as a vacation destination, there are several families on the island that call our beloved piece of paradise home. Of those individuals, many are in need in some way and rely on the kindness of the community to help provide them with food and other basic items.

Donate Food

The food pantry at the Presbyterian Church provides food for dozens of in-need families. The food pantry is managed and organized by the Presbyterian Church, but other local churches help support its mission. The pantry is always in need of non-perishable canned goods, particularly canned meats, canned vegetables, and powdered milk. You can also donate household items like paper products and toiletries.

Visit www.pcedisto.org for more information about the food pantry.

Help the Animals

Giving back to the animals on Edisto is something many individuals ask about. You can help out Edisto’s homeless dogs by making a donation to Animal Lovers of Edisto Canine Rescue. This is Edisto’s only rescue organization for the many homeless and abandoned dogs that call the island home. Each year, the organization saves anywhere from 50-100 dogs. They provide these animals with vetting, necessary medical treatments, preventative flea/tick/heartworm medications, exercise, and most of all, love and affection. The group is always in need of donations, volunteers, adopters and foster families.

A Little Bit of Everything Else

Edisto United is a relatively new venture that combines three of the islands charities under one umbrella. These organizations includes Project Based Learning (formerly known as Learning Through Loggerheads), the Edisto Elves, and Edisto Eats.

These organizations focus on helping the island’s youngest residents to realize their potential. The programs do this by identifying and providing resources to benefit the development of these children and young adults. The three organizations also help provide job training, career development, and fulfill the basic needs to these young people.

In fact, Edisto Elves helps provide many of the children on Edisto with gifts during the holiday season.

Visit edistounited.org for more information about how you can help.
